What to wear to a wedding as a guest in Australia
Last updated 2 November 2026
Read the dress code on the invitation, then check the venue and the start time. Cocktail means a knee-length or midi dress. Formal or black tie means floor-length. No dress code usually means a midi or a long dress in a colour that is not white, ivory or cream.
Time of day matters as much as the words. A 2pm garden ceremony and a 6pm ballroom dinner can carry the same dress code and ask for very different dresses.
What the dress codes on the invitation mean
Cocktail: knee-length to midi, or a dressy jumpsuit. Semi-formal: a midi or a long dress in a lighter fabric. Formal: floor-length, or a very smart midi if the wedding is in the daytime. Black tie: a gown. Garden party or chic: florals, linen blends and block heels that will not sink into lawn.
If the invitation says nothing, ask the couple or someone in the wedding party. Guessing is how people end up in cocktail dresses at a black tie dinner.

See allSummer: outdoor ceremonies in heat
A January ceremony in Brisbane, Perth or western Sydney can sit above 35 degrees, and in Queensland the afternoon storm is a fair bet. Pick breathable fabrics: cotton blends, linen blends, light crepe and chiffon. Satin looks good and shows every mark of sweat.
Skip anything fully lined in polyester if the ceremony is in the sun. Pack a small umbrella that doubles as shade, and flat sandals or block heels for the lawn.
Winter and shoulder season
June to August in Melbourne, Hobart and Canberra is cold at an evening venue, and old churches are colder. Long sleeves, velvet, heavier crepe and a wrap you can wear through dinner all earn their place. Spring is the least predictable: bring a layer.
What not to wear
White, ivory, cream and champagne are the bride's. Skip anything sequinned head to toe at a daytime ceremony, and anything you cannot sit down in through a long reception. Black is accepted at most weddings, particularly in the evening.
Renting a guest dress on Ourfit
Wedding dates cluster, so the dress you want may be taken. Request early and choose a 4 or 8 day window that starts a day or two before the wedding. Pick it up if the lender offers pickup, or have it posted by Australia Post. There is no cash bond: a card is held on file, and any damage charge is capped at the item's retail price.
