How to choose a size when renting a dress

Last updated 2 November 2026

Use a piece you already own from the same brand as your guide, then ask the lender. The number on the label varies between brands, and the lender knows how this particular dress sits.

Book the dress to arrive at least a day before you need it.

Check the listing

Each listing shows the brand and the size. Look for a note on stretch, lining and boning, and look at the back photo. A bias-cut silk with no stretch is less forgiving than a jersey wrap in the same size.

Measure, then compare

Take your bust, waist, hips and height. Compare them with the brand's size chart, not a generic one. If you are between sizes, choose the larger for a fitted dress with a zip, and the smaller for a stretchy one.

Ask the lender

Message them before you book. Useful questions: how tall are you, which size do you wear, and does it run small. Lenders often know how the dress fits people of different heights, which no chart tells you.

Leave time to fix it

Choose a rental that starts a day or two before the event. Try the dress with your shoes and underwear as soon as it arrives. Rented pieces belong to the lender, so check before you alter anything. Tape and a good steamer fix more than you would think.
