Cocktail dress code: what to wear
Last updated 2 November 2026
Cocktail attire means a dress that sits at the knee or just below it, or a midi, or a dressy jumpsuit. For men it means a suit. Floor-length is too much, and a sundress is too little.
It is the dress code people most often get wrong, nearly always by going too casual.
What to wear
Silk, satin, crepe, lace and sequins all suit cocktail. A tailored jumpsuit or a skirt and top set that matches works as well as a dress. Wear heels or dressy flats, and carry a clutch, not a tote.
For men: a suit in navy, charcoal or black, with a dress shirt and leather shoes. A tie is your call unless the invitation asks for one.

See allCocktail against semi-formal and black tie
Semi-formal is almost the same, and allows a long dress in a light fabric. Black tie is the step above: a gown and a tuxedo. If you are unsure between cocktail and the next level up, the higher level is the safer mistake.
Where cocktail turns up
Engagement parties, evening weddings, work Christmas parties and milestone birthdays. Those are the occasions people tend to repeat in a season, which is why cocktail dresses rent well: you can wear a different one to each.
Renting a cocktail dress
On Ourfit, rentals run for 4 or 8 days and each lender sets the price. Where a lender offers pickup you can see the dress before the night. Otherwise it comes by Australia Post, so allow for postage when you pick your dates.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I wear a long dress to a cocktail event?
- A midi is fine. A floor-length gown usually reads as overdressed.
- Do I need heels for cocktail attire?
- No. Dressy flats work if the rest of the outfit is dressy.
- Is cocktail attire the same as semi-formal?
- They are close. Semi-formal allows a little more length.
